Why it works

It fails when the device does not suit the skin, which is how people with deeper skin tones get burned, and it fails when the sessions are too few or too far apart to catch each growth cycle, which is how a three-pack ends in "it barely worked". The Skin Read answers the first with a skin reading and a test patch. The plan answers the second with a written session count you can hold us to.

Treated areas should be shaved, not waxed, before a session, and kept out of the sun for two weeks either side. Mateo sends the calendar for your area before you leave.

Candour

For
  • Anyone with hair darker than their skin, on any skin type, who wants a smaller or finer regrowth rather than a weekly shave.
  • People who have been burned or oversold elsewhere and want the settings and the sessions written down.
  • People with deeper skin tones: see the dedicated page for how we plan it.
Not for, or not yet
  • Very light, grey or red hair, which lasers do not see well. We will say so at the Skin Read.
  • Skin that has had sun in the last two weeks, or a fresh tan. We wait.
  • Anyone taking a medication that makes skin light-sensitive; the Skin Read checks this.

Questions

Questions people ask before they book

Still unsure? Call (619) 555-0147 and ask Mateo.

How many sessions do I need?

Most areas need six to eight sessions, four to eight weeks apart, then one or two a year. The plan gives you your number before you start, and the guide on sessions explains why it varies by area.

Is it permanent?

Lasers are cleared for permanent hair reduction, not removal. Hair grows back finer and sparser; most people keep a maintenance session or two a year. We never call it removal.

Does it hurt?

A hot snap each pulse, like a rubber band, with cooling on the handpiece. Bikini and upper lip feel sharper than legs. We tell you the sensation scale for your area at the Skin Read.

Can I have it with a tan?

No. Tanned skin takes a laser differently, so we wait two weeks after sun before a session and ask you to keep the area covered or sunscreened for two weeks after. The sun-season calendar plans around the beach.

Why a test patch?

Because a small patch checked at forty-eight hours tells us how your skin reacts before a whole area is treated. If it darkens, lightens or blisters, the plan changes first.

What should I do before a session?

Shave the area the day before, do not wax or pluck for four weeks, skip self-tanner, and tell us about any new medication. Mateo sends the full list with your plan.
